According to Wikipedia, Sanka was developed in 1903 by researcher Ludwig Roselius of Germany. Originally called Kaffee and sold in European countries. France called it "Sanka" meaning 'without caffeine' from the French words sans cafeine.

The product came to the United States in 1909-10, where it was sold as 'Dekofa'. In 1914, Roselius started his own company, Kaffee HAG corp., in New York. His company was confiscated during WW1 and sold to another American firm losing his business and trademark rights. He then re-established his business using the name Sanka, marketing it in the U.S. in 1923.
